Career Implications

Initially developed over 30 years ago, Unix stands as the oldest operating system still in continuous use. Linux is a successor to Unix that now powers the majority of the world's web servers, and looks poised to continue on its track of rapid growth now that it has become a central component of modern cloud computing environments.

According to a recent report from International Data Corporation (IDC), Linux momentum is building even faster than previously thought, with Linux-related annual revenues now surpassing the USD $35 billion mark. Reports from Internet job-search sites such as Dice.com further confirm that Linux skills are in high demand, with workers earning very competitive salaries.

Linux skills can also be directly applied towards other Unix-based operating systems like Mac OS X, and can lay the groundwork for lucrative careers in such fields as systems and database administration, networking, security, web master, graphics and animation, and many others.
